Research Focus:
A functional nervous system is built of a myriad of neuronal cell types, which allows for complex computations. My goal is to understand how neuronal types obtain their specific identities in the adult (i.e., which molecular programs unfold during development). One main source of information that cells use to help guide them to the correct fates is when they are produced during development, a phenomenon called temporal patterning. During my PhD I studied temporal patterning mechanisms operating in Drosophila, a system that is highly deterministic. One of my goals during my postdoc in the Fishell lab is to understand whether time of birth also influences interneuron identities. To this end, I am focusing on the SST interneuron types and asking whether time of birth correlates with the multiple SST subtypes present in the adult.
